A Few Facts from the Mineral Management Service-Interior Department

The following statistics from the Department of Interior, Mineral Management Service give a sense of the extent of alternative energy resource that we have in the United States.

1.7 billion - Acres that make up the outer continetal shelf and have potential for wind, wave and ocean current generated electricity.
28 - Contiguous states with coastal boundaries (including the Great Lakes).
78 percent - Portion of our nation's electricity used by coastal states.
20 percent - Portion of coastal state's electricity needs that could come from shallow water wind resources.

The source for these statistics is Government Executive Magazine, June 2009. These statistics also show the work we have ahead of us in meeting the existing and deepening energy crisis.
